When Couponing Gets Exhausting

Right now, I am fortunate. I happen to be a teacher, so I have extra time on my hands for researching deals and planning out shopping trips. After school starts, my "extra time" becomes null and void. When school starts, I will be rolling out of the bed between 4:45 and 5:00 AM, will pack lunches, Austin's breakfast and head out the door by 6:30 AM, with the purpose of dropping Austin off at school by 7:00, so I can make it to work by 7:25 AM. I get off at 3:30, will make the treck home and hope that I can be home between 4:00 and 4:30 PM. Homework, dinner, dishes, baths, and bedtime leave little time for much of anything. Does that mean that my savings will go out the window? Absolutely NOT! Why? Well, I am absolutely committed to making an efficient system so that my savings can continue in spite of my lack of personal time.

I will share with you how I do it--how I manage to get it all together and head to the grocery store and save some serious dough. But before I do, remember that my system isn't the one that will work for everyone. You need to come up with your own. You can head on over to my post, Couponing 101, if you need more information about organization systems for coupons. So this is how I make it all work during the school year...
Sunday: We always stop at 7-11 on the way to church. I pick up the newspapers, and my husband has his giant soda. After we get home from church (I usually have lunch in the crock pot), we eat lunch and most of the time we all take a nap. When I wake up, I clip my coupons. I talk about my stacking, stapling and cutting method in my Couponing 101 post. I try to file them. I am being very honest here. Sometimes I do NOT have time to file them. It gets put off to another night.
Monday-Thursday: I get the coupons filed, and search out the sales I want. I am fortunate that I know where to get all of the information regarding the stores I want, and I put it all on my blog. The coupon matchups on my blog are just as much for me as they are for you. In fact, I have my blog as an icon on my iPhone so I can access it in the store in case I forgot about a sale I posted. I usually make a list by store. I will write down the item, what it's on sale for and what the coupon will save me. I also write the final price. I actually add up the final prices on my list to make sure I'm staying within my budget.
When I shop: Many times I shop on the way home from work. I go to work prepared with my coupons and list and stop on the way home. I usually only shop every 2 weeks. Die hard couponers will tell you that my method is bad and I should budget myself so I can do it once a week at all my stores. They are right... I could be doing it every week, and I may even save more. But I'm being honest here--that's not easy. So I do everything I can to maximize my savings every 2 weeks. I often challenge myself to stay within a budget I set for myself, and I strive to stockpile as much as I can.

I encourage all of my readers (and I don't have many yet!) to do everything YOU can to save money. Don't beat yourself up because someone on the forum at Hot Coupon World got all of her groceries this week for $2.79 and she bought so much her husband had to rent a UHaul to get it all home. Did you save money? Then celebrate your savings. Set small goals and do what you can to reach them. If you are reading this and you are absolutely strapped right now, for whatever reason...you are probably overwhelmed with whatever your situation is. That's okay. Don't stress yourself that you have to become an avid couponer like never before right now. Tell yourself you CAN do it and do everything you can to save money. Happy Savings!

Pray for Stellan-UPDATE to Blog Hop

MckMama, Baby Stellan's mom, created a blog carnival called Not Me Monday. It is rather hilarious and allows those of us who are imperfect mothers to pretend to be perfect, if only just for a moment.

However, many in the blogosphere have chosen to tribute this Monday's post to Praying for Stellan.

You see, when MckMama was pregnant with Stellan, she and her husband were told he would surely die from heart failure before delivery. And if he miraculously made it to delivery, he would surely perish shortly thereafter. But, God had a different plan and Stellan was born alive and is now 8 months old. However, as I type this, he is sitting in the PICU with his parents by his side with the doctors doing everything they can to keep him alive. He suffers from SVT, which is a really high heart rate. Today in fact he lost much of the color in his body and was listless. He's had lots of medications, many procedures and the doctors have been unable to get his heart rate to regulate. He's too young for a pacemaker and another ablation could be catostrophic. So right now the doctors are on a wing and a prayer trying to keep this sweet boy alive. All the while, there are three other siblings at home who are all 4 and under.

I have never met MckMama, Jennifer, in person. She wouldn't know me on the street if I passed her. So you might ask why I am so touched and moved by this family. It's because of their resolve to trust the Lord with their baby. You see, just over a year ago, my sweet boy had his tonsils and adenoids removed. Everything was so enlarged that his poor little throat was inflamed. He wasn't getting enough oxygen saturation when he slept, so what was supposed to be a quick outpatient surgery ended up being an overnight stay in the Children's Hospital. I remember in the wee hours of the night, after my wonderful husband had gone home to rest, how distraught I was. I was tired, my son was tired--but he was in pain. Poor baby kept asking for jello and Mac and Cheese to avoid laying down and realizing his pain. Finally in the early morning, my baby slept and I got a little rest on the parent bed. I remember how sad I felt for my son to be in that pain. And for the next week, spending hours on end and going without sleep for the majority of the night, wondering when I could stop giving him the pain meds and when he would finally be able to enjoy a decent meal again. That was a hard week for me. But then I look at the McKinney family. Do they get upset and sad about their son? Of course! They are human after all, but even after tears and anger, you can still hear them tell you that God is in control and knows the outcome of these dark days for their poor baby. It makes me ashamed that I was ever down over a tonsilectomy, or tube surgery or even a sinus infection in my own child. It teaches me that I myself need to learn to trust the Lord with even the smallest things--because I'm gonna need that trust when the big things come along.

So puruse on over to MckMama's website. Read Stellan's story. Take a few minutes to pray for this baby, his family and his team of doctors. Then, go hug your own children--and if they are healthy, thank GOD that in His provision He gave you healthy children.

Coupon Sources

I would like to take a few minutes to address frugal ways to obtain coupons. We happen to be fortunate in my area that our newspaper costs .50 cents per paper on Sundays. It is obvious that the BEST source for coupons is your local Sunday newspaper. Many people from cities other than my own have mentioned that their newspapers run $2.00 or more each on Sundays. That is quite a hefty price--especially when you consider how quickly that adds up when purchasing multiple papers. So with that in consideration, I am going to discuss some strategies to lower your out of pocket cost for newspapers each week. If you need further explanation as to why in the world you would want multiple newspapers each week, please take the time to read my post, Couponing 101. It will fill you in on basic couponing strategy, including the purchase of multiple newspapers.

Frugal Coupon Strategies:
-Call your local newspaper. Find out if they will cut you a deal on delivering multiple copies of your Sunday paper each week. Business is down for everyone, and you never know the deal you may get if you order papers in bulk. If your paper is $2.00, and you're spending $8.00 on Sundays buying 4 papers, you may save tremendously by purchasing in bulk. Even if your paper is more affordable, it is a good idea to call your paper and inquire about bulk delivery on Sundays. Your budget may just thank you.
-Talk to your friends. Do you have coworkers, friends, neighbors, acquaintances, etc that get the paper delivered on Sundays and do not use the coupons? Ask them to save the inserts for you. Send an email out to friends, coworkers, family members, etc asking them for their inserts. You never know who may be happy to give them to you.
-Recycling Bins: Many people discard their coupons in Recycling Bins and place them on their curb. Go out before the Recycling Truck arrives and see if you can find some. This is time consuming, but does prove to be rewarding for some. Just be sure it's not illegal in your community.
-Curbside Newspaper Sales: In many communities, there are vendors on the streets in the mornings selling the paper. I see them frequently on the way to church on Sundays. You can offer the vendor a deal. For example, in my situation, 10 papers cost $5.00 on Sunday. I could offer the vendor $4 for the papers. In other words, haggle and see what kind of deal you can strike.

Always remember that if you are saving tremendously more than you are spending on newspapers each week, then you are getting a good return on your investment. However, if you are purchasing the papers and aren't using the coupons, then you are wasting your money. Be frugal. Think through how you purchase the papers, how many you are purchasing and consider if you are spending your money wisely. Happy Savings!

Please Pray for Stellan

Integrity

I am going to begin this post by saying that I never started this blog to make any kind of political statement whatsoever. I won’t hide the fact that I call Jesus Lord of my Life, or my love for the husband and son God gave to me. But my purpose in starting a blog was not motivated in any way whatsoever by the desire to make political statements of any kind.

And this post really isn’t about politics. This post is about personal integrity as it relates to how we respond to the politicians making a mess out of running our country . Just for the record--before I get into any of what has been bothering me lately--I am neither Republican nor Democrat. I am in fact registered Independent . I believe in small government, more personal responsibility, and moral standards of behavior. You don’t have to agree or disagree, but there it is for the record.

Unless you’ve been in a cave somewhere, you know that we recently elected a new President. Well, every time I turn around, someone has an opinion about President Obama’s policies. It seems he is either loved or hated by the individuals I speak with. I hear a lot of extreme comments. Most of the extreme comments are on the negative side regarding Mr. Obama. I am not going to get into what I agree or disagree with regarding our newly elected President’s policies.

But what I am going to discuss is operating with integrity when discussing politicians, or any topic for that matter. I looked up the definition of integrity at dictionary.com, and this is what it said: adherence to moral and ethical principles; soundness of moral character; honesty. Honesty.

Hmm… well, I could write a whole post regarding the honesty of the media. But this isn’t about things we can’t control. This is about things we can control--ourselves.

Before the election, I can’t tell you how many individuals insisted Barack Obama would be sworn in on the Koran. That he was a Muslim and not only that, supported terrorism in the United States. Well, I did a little research and just typing in some search terms into Google, I quickly became aware that not only did Mr. Obama intend to be sworn in on the Bible, but profess to be of the Christian faith and his family intended to attend a Christian church in the DC area after election. And above all, there was no proof that Mr. Obama sought the presidency for the purpose of bringing terror to the U.S. All of those accusations sound quite sensational. I have to admit that it would be a terrible thing if we elected an individual that had deceived us so well that he or she would actually insight acts of terror on our country. But the fact of the matter is that none of it was true. And I can’t tell you how many people who profess to be born again Christians continually spread these very untrue and horrible rumors regarding Mr. Obama.
Why is that okay? Why is it supposedly acceptable to spread lies about someone? You may not like the politician, but why is it okay to lie about them? If you don’t like them, then say so. And if someone asks why you don’t like them, do a little research and get SOME FACTS about why you don’t like them. I’m sorry, but the internet is just way too readily available for people to NOT research on topics they are concerned about.

Obama being sworn in on the same Bible that President Lincoln used.

So my point is that before you express “what you heard” about a politician, a new policy, or anything else, do some research. If you don’t want to take the time to research the topic, then refrain from speaking about the topic.

I would like you to put yourself in a hypothetical situation for a moment. Let’s say you are running for Public Office of some kind. Let’s say it’s City Council. For the purpose of this scenario, let’s imagine for a moment that your city has a serious issue with road drainage. On your platform, you tell your constituents that you are going to head an effort to improve the road drainage problems. When asked about how you are going to pay for them, you answer that you are going to explore all avenues of funding the project, from raising taxes to dipping into city reserves, but that you wanted the least impact to the individual. Well, after your news conference, what you said is turned around. Everyone begins to claim that you are going to repair the roads by putting toll roads on every major road and raising the sales tax to 8%. Think about that for a minute. You didn’t say that for a second, but someone turned around what you said and it became gospel truth to the naysayers. Let’s make it a little more personal. While you are running for City Council, that the question of how you raise your children comes into question. You tell them you want to raise your children to be well rounded and cultured. Then someone turns it around to say you are raising your children to be evil because you are allowing them to learn about Arab cultures. Do you get it? Do you understand how wrong it is to spread falsehoods about others?

We are all going to face adversity whether we spend our lives as a public figure or just a normal every day employee. We can’t control whether someone chooses to spread lies about us, but we CAN control who we speak about.

We can control our own integrity-- honesty. Think about it.
