Make Your Own Preserves/Jam/Jelly

Austin is an addict to jelly. He loves the stuff. Wants it on everything. Then I realized that the store bought jelly I had was full of sugar, high fructose corn syrup and things I can't pronounce. I decided I needed to make my own jelly/jam/preserves. I mean Austin already bounces off the walls, I really didn't need more sugar and other junk to help that along... really. So below is the recipe I used. I now have plenty of jam stored away for quite some time. I actually went to the Farmer's Market and got a ton of peaches and strawberries for a reasonable price. This made the whole process a frugal method as well. Oh, and if you are a little funny about using granulated sugar, you could also use raw sugar, turbinado sugar, unrefined sugar (whatever you want to call it) as well.

Ingredients:
4 cups of crushed fresh fruit-whatever kind you like
1 packet of Bell Fruit Jell Freezer Jam Pectin
3/4 cup of sugar (the box says 1 1/2 cups, but I used less)

You can dice the fruit up really small, mash it, or put it in the food processor or blender. Whatever you want. Then I added the sugar and pectin and the box says to stir it for three minutes. Then you put it in whatever containers you are going to store it in and let it sit with the lid on for at least 30 mins. Refrigerate for up to 3 weeks or freeze for up to a year.

Containers: I found plastic containers in the housewares section at Walmart made by Bell. I liked them b/c they were designed for freezer jams and the lids screw on. Really though, you can use whatever containers you want, even freezer bags I guess.

Oh, and I found the freezer pectin around the jello at Walmart.

Make Your Own Laundry Detergent

One way I save money is to make my own laundry detergent. For about $6 you can have enough supplies to make 15 or more gallons of detergent…. This should last nearly a year. All of these ingredients can be bought at Publix in the Laundry Aisle.

Recipe:

¼ bar Fels Napthia Soap

½ cup Washing Soda

½ Cup Borax

Grate the soap using a cheese grater. Add all ingredients into large pot. Add one gallon of water. Boil all ingredients and stir until dissolved. Allow the solution to cool. Use a funnel to put the detergent into an empty detergent container or milk jug. Let it sit overnight. The next day it needs to be shaken really well. Then shake it before using and use about ½ cup per load. I found that it does not dispense well out of a dispenser container, it’s best to pour it. You can also add essential oils for fragrance, if you’d like.

I have gotten so many emails lately from people who are wanting to know how to “do CVS.” There is really no better time than this to get started. With the state of the economy who couldn’t use a lower grocery/household bill? So, for all of you who have requested it, here’s a lesson in how to work CVS and the Extra Care Buck program.

First, you will need to get a CVS card.

It is just like any other grocery store or drugstore loyalty card. You probably have several already. The cashier scans your card and you get a discount on your groceries. The difference in the CVS card is that you don’t get a discount up front, but you get Extra Care Bucks following a purchase. How do you get a CVS card? The best way is to ask the cashier for one at the store. You’ll fill out a quick form and they’ll give you a card that day. This is the best scenario because you’ll be able to use the card right away. You can, however, get a card online HERE.

The next thing you will need is a CVS weekly flyer and a CVS monthly booklet.

The weekly ad is just like any store circular. It will have all the deals including a couple of items that earn ECBs (or Extra Care Bucks). For example, one of the items in this week’s flyer is the Excedrin 10ct. Vial for $2.49. Under this it says you’ll get $2.49 ECBs – making it “FREE” with a limit of 1. Let’s say you just decided to get this one item. You take it to the checkout. It will ring up $2.49 + tax. You will have to pay the amount. But, then you’ll get a receipt and at the end of the receipt it will say you’ve earned $2.49 ECBs. Don’t loose this receipt! This little “coupon” at the end of your receipt is just that – a coupon! You can cut it off and keep it and use it just like cash on your next transaction. It will take $2.49 off your total.

Ready for Transactions:

Okay now that you have your card and your flyers you are ready to decide what to buy and plan your transactions. You can also use this blog to help you.

Of course items that are “FREE” after ECBs are going to earn back all your money with little effort. Let’s say this week Gillette deodorant is on sale for $3.99 and you’ll earn $3.99 and the Excedrin is $2.49 and will earn you $2.49 in ECBs. You don’t have any coupons. So your transaction goes like this:

Buy Gillette deodorant $3.99

Buy Excedrin $2.49

Final Total: $6.48

You'll pay $6.48 + tax and at the end of your receipt you'll get 2 ECBs. One will say $3.99 and the other will say $2.49. So, you earned a total of $6.48 in ECBs - your products were "free."

Now, the next step - using manufacturer's coupons with transactions:

Let's take the same scenario as above but this time you've brough along a coupon for Excedrin for $2 off and a BOGO (buy one get one free coupon) on the Gillette deodorant. Your transaction will go like this:

Buy (2) Gillette deodorants $3.99 each (total:$7.98)

Buy Excedrin $2.49

Final Total: $10.47

Use $2 coupon for Excedrin

Use BOGO coupon for the two deodorants

Final total after coupons: $4.48

You’ll pay $4.48 out of pocket +tax and at the end of the receipt you will receive an ECB for $2.49 for the Excedrin and another $7.98 for the deodorant (assuming there wasn’t a limit of one). So, you earned a total of $10.47 in ECBs to spend like cash next time – even though you only spent $4.48!

Now let's make it more confusing! =)

Using CVS $/$$ Coupons:

Every now and then CVS releases $/$$ coupons. These come in the newspaper, online, and every now and then they’ll print on the end of your receipt or in your email! These coupons are in denominations of $2/$10 (meaning $2 off of a $10 purchase), $3/$15 (meaning $3 off a $15 purchase), and $4/$20 (meaning $4 off of a $20 purchase). These can be used in addition to manufacturer’s coupons. So, let’s take the same transaction as above one more time:

Buy (2) Gillette deodorants $3.99 each (total:$7.98)

Buy Excedrin $2.49

Final Total: $10.47

Use the $2 off of $10 coupon (it is important to use this coupon FIRST while your total is over $10).

Use $2 coupon for Excedrin

Use BOGO coupon for the two deodorants

Final total after coupons: $2.48

You’ll pay $2.48 out of pocket +tax and at the end of the receipt you will receive an ECB for $2.49 for the Excedrin and another $7.98 for the deodorant (assuming there wasn’t a limit of one). So, you earned a total of $10.47 in ECBs to spend like cash next time – even though you only spent $2.48!

The goal in CVS shopping is to pay very little out of pocket and take home products you can use and products that you NEED.

So, each week or so you’ll want to use your ECBs to pay for your purchases instead of using your cash.

Let’s say I did the above transaction. I only spent $2.48 my first week of CVS shopping and I brought home 2 deodorants and a bottle of Excedrin. Not very exciting, but I can use both products or donate them and I have $10.47 to spend the following week. (Note: you can use your ECBs immediately after they print but let’s just say I did one transaction a week to keep it simple). The following week I look at my flyer and determine that toothpaste is $2.99 this week and will earn me $2.99 in ECBs and a pack of Bic razors are $6.99 and will earn me $4 in ECBs. I decide those are things that will earn me the most bucks and they are items I can use. I also have a $1 off coupon for the toothpaste and a $2 coupon for the razors. As you can see I am basically making $1 off the toothpaste and paying only $1 for the razors. I also really need milk this week and would like to try to see if I can pay for it with ECBs to take that off my grocery budget. So my transaction goes like this.

Buy (2) toothpastes $2.99 each ($5.98 total)

Buy razors $6.99

Buy Milk $3.99

Final Price: $16.96

Use $3/$15 CVS coupon

Use (2) $1 off toothpaste coupons

Use $2 razor coupon

Final total after coupons: $9.96 + tax

Then, I use my $7.98 ECB from last week

That means I spend $2.02 cash and I earned another $5.98 ECBs for the toothpaste and $4 ECB for the razors. That is a total of $9.98 in ECBs for next week to spend (plus the $2.48 ECB from the Excedrin the week before I haven’t used yet). So, I took home more products I can use and the milk I needed plus I have MORE money to spend next week!

That is the goal with CVS shopping – to keep “rolling” (using ECBs from last week this week) your ECBs over and “growing” (making more ECBs this week then you had the last). Some weeks are bad, you may roll your ECBs and lose a few. Other weeks are worse, you “blow” your ECBs. But, no worries, you can always do better next week. Don’t give up over one bad week!

Just remember: when you get to the check out you’ll need to follow these steps:

Present your card to the cashier so she/he can scan it.

The cashier will scan all your stuff.

Present an $/$$ CVS coupons

Present any manufacturer’s coupons

Pay with ECBs*

Pay the remaining balance with cash

*You will NOT get change on your ECBs. If your total is $8.23 and you have an ECB for $9 the cashier can scan it but you won’t get the $0.77 back. You could throw in a candy bar or something and make sure to use it all up. Otherwise you’ll be throwing away “money.”

The Basic Concept:

- An item is on sale at the store Buy One Get One Free. You have at least 2 coupons on that item. You buy 2 of that item and use 2 coupons, therefore getting it at a rock bottom price.

- Example: Frosted Flakes normally cost $4 a box. They are BOGO at Publix. You have 2 $1 off coupons. You buy 2 boxes of Frosted Flakes for $4 and then have your coupons $2 total, and you just bought 2 boxes of cereal for $2.

Newspapers:

It is absolutely essential to buy multiple newspapers every Sunday. At the very least you must buy 2 to take advantage of the BOGO sales. However, most people buy more. For a family of 4, I would recommend purchasing at minimum 6 newspapers per week. The St. Pete Times is 50 cents on the side of the rd and at most 7-Elevens. Sometimes, people buying 10 or more newspapers are able to strike a deal with the street vendors, like 12 newspapers for $5.

WHY would you buy so many newspapers-- the answer is to create a stockpile of items you buy on sale, so you do not buy that item again until it is on sale again.

Stockpiling:

This is where you need to think creatively a little. It may seem a little nuts to buy 18 boxes of cereal at a time for example. But most dry and non perishable items will not go bad. Be careful about cake mixes and pancake mixes however, as they can spoil and become toxic. It is recommended to freeze those items if you are stockpiling them. You can freeze just about anything. I freeze milk, orange juice, lunch meat, raw meat, bread, bacon, cheese… you name it, I have frozen it. Just be careful about freezing things like bread that comes in tubes…it won’t rise as much. If you don’t have a chest freezer or upright freezer, you may want to look into getting one if you are serious about creating a stockpile. Also, if you are serious about stockpiling, after your normal food pantry is overflowing, you will probably need to find an alternate place to store your non perishables. Many people have an extra cheap shelf in their garage. Do not rush out this weekend and buy shelving for your garage and a brand new chest freezer. Get those things as time goes… and always on sale or used first. J

Organization:

There are several ways to organize your coupons. I recommend doing it the cheapest way possible that won’t drive you insane when finding your coupons before your shopping trip. I will outline three ways below:

1. Shoe box organizer: This is the method I use most often. There are 90+ categories in my box. I stack coupons together, staple them and then cut them out. Then I file each stack of coupons under the appropriate category. This is good for me because I am a visual person and if I cut it out, I can usually picture it when I go to find it.

2. File folders or Whole Insert Method: This is probably the least time consuming. It is good for those of us who have a lot going on and just have the time to get the coupons we needs for our trips. Simply stack all of the like inserts together, write the date on the front, and file that weeks coupons in a file folder. Some people have drop files in a crate that they keep the file folders in. Most importantly, do not spend a lot of money on an organization system. Use what you have.

3. Baseball Card Page Method: This is by far the most expensive and in my opinion, the most time consuming. You get a 5 inch binder, a ton of baseball card pages, tabs for the sides with categories and then file your coupons so you can see them. This can be very expensive, as 12 baseball card pages run about $4 or more, and you would need at least 90 to have all the categories.

How to Organize Your Shopping Trip:

1. Utilize one of the many websites listed below to get the coupons that are matched up to the sales at the stores. Make your list from those websites.

2. Pull the coupons from your organized collection of coupons.

3. Put your list and coupons into an envelope.

4. Go to the store, find the items on your list and put coupons in a separate envelope or place as you have the items.

5. Group the items together in your basket and place them that way on the conveyor belt when you check out.

6. Let the cashier know you have a lot of coupons. Sometimes they will want them in advance. If the store is busy, let people behind you know you have coupons, often people get aggravated with couponers b/c it takes longer.

Websites

1. www.thegrocerygame.com This is the ONLY pay website listed here. It costs $4 for the first month and then $10 every 2 months thereafter. I subscribe to this only for Publix. The more stores you subscribe to, the higher the cost. This saves me a lot of time as it lists the sales and the coupons to go with it. It lists EVERY item on sale at Publix, even if there are no coupons available for that item.

2. Coupon Group: groups.yahoo.com Find the group: Florida Couponers. Follow the direction to sign up. This is a message based group of people in the area that coupon big time. They list deals they have found as well as other couponing tips. The owner of this site has been in the paper for her savings. This is where I have learned the majority of what I do.

3. www.couponmom.com This is good to match up coupons to sales at Walmart. Walmart isn’t the easiest place to shop with coupons, however. I have found that the Gibsonton Walmart is most cooperative with coupons.

4. http://thecentsiblesawyer.blogspot.com/ This is a teacher’s blog. She gives links to internet coupons matched up to sales at Publix. She also mentions many other sales and explains how she saves money each week.

5. www.afullcup.com An online forum for sales at various stores. Helps you find the best deals. There is also a Target Coupon Generator that allows you to print unlimited numbers of Target coupons.

6. http://www.fiddledeedeemom.com/ Another blog that helps you find lots of savings. She also lists a more comprehensive list of Publix sales and links them to coupons online.

7. www.iheartcvs.com This helps you find great deals at CVS.

Coupon Sources

1. The newspaper every Sunday: Research the papers available in your area. Sometimes street vendors will cut you a deal on multiple newspapers, and you may even be able to get multiple Sunday papers delivered to you at a discounted subscription rate. There are usually several inserts of coupons in each paper on Sunday. The websites listed above will often list the coupons to be expected ahead of time. Then you can plan accordingly. When there are more inserts and the coupons are good, I buy more newspapers that week. The coupon inserts are generally named as follows: Smart Source (SS) Valsasis (V), Proctor and Gamble (P&G) and then there may be one or two others named something else to promote a sale in a category… such as “Healthy Eating”.

2. Internet: Many manufacturers have coupons on the internet that you can print. The rule of thumb is that you can print 2 coupons per month per computer on that item. These must be printed in color or the stores will not take them. Walmart and Target are known to give customers a hard time about Internet Printable Coupons (IPCs). The only place I’ve had a problem is Walmart in New Tampa.

3. Coupon Clipping services: There are coupon clipping services on the internet. You simply order the coupons, pay online and they arrive to you clipped. I do not recommend this unless you know you are going to reap massive savings. This can get expensive.

4. Ebay: You can bid on specific coupons or lots of coupons.

5. Blinkies: These are the coupon dispensers in the stores on the shelves. Pull lots of them out and then file them. You can use these at ANY store, unless the store name is written on it.

6. Store ads: Often times store ads will have coupons such as “Save $10 of a purchase of $50 or more”. It is important to note that Publix will honor these coupons from Winn Dixie and Sweetbay.

Meat

I purpose to only buy meat that is on sale or is less than $2.00 a pound. I often find a roast (such as London Broil) that is on sale for less than I would pay per pound for lean ground beef and I ask the butcher at the grocery store to grind it up for me. Then I take it home, separate it into portions and freeze it. I find meat at Publix, Winn Dixie, Sams, and The Land and Sea Market. The Land and Sea Market has a weekly special that provides quite a bit of meat for $25.99 www.landandseamarket.com Their specials run Wednesday through Tuesday. I haven’t been there, but a friend recommends Land O Lakes Meat Market and says you can get phenomenal deals there.

Other Important Tips

1. Most stores will take a manufacturers coupon (found in the paper) as well as a store coupon on one item. This maximizes savings.

2. Kmart sometimes has double coupons. However, you must be careful as they often have higher prices and you really don’t save anything. Kmart is really difficult when couponing because it seems that the cashiers aren’t trained to handle multiple coupons in one purchase.

3. Do everything you can to avoid coupon fraud. Do not try to use multiple coupons on one item and do your best to follow the store policies.

4. At first, it will be slow going as you begin to become an avid couponer. It will take a least a month to build a good stockpile of coupons and then you can begin saving more. Keep working at it. The woman who owns Florida Couponers feeds her family of 6 for less than $200 a month. It took her a year to get to that point, but she does it and she has a stockpile to last nearly a year.

5. Go to the store prepared and with a list. It will save you anguish and time.

6. Don’t become discouraged… even a little saved is better than none at all.
